I’ve always interpreted Bellatrix as the personification of manic obsession (which I guess is as close to *love* as she could get). In that sense, I think HBC did a fantastic job. Yeah, she was kooky… but she was also terrifying. I don’t know about you, OP, but the zany, “laughably” disturbed ones are always the ones that frighten me the most (a la The Joker).
